Destiny Urban Trail
Type of Trail:
Urban trail.
Historical Perspective:
The Calgary and Edmonton Trail was the stagecoach route connecting the railway in Calgary with Edmonton, largely replacing the Carlton Trail along the North Saskatchewan River. Innisfail, then known as Poplar Grove, was a favourite resting point on this challenging three-day trip. The home of Dr.George, an early doctor in this area, is on the route and a short branch trail leads to the Innisfail Historical Village, Napoleon Lake Recreation Area and the Upland Aspen Trail.
Terrain:
The trail enters from the south near Hwy #2 and passes along the scenic Dodd’s Lake. The trail leaves town to the north along the historic Calgary and Edmonton Trail, which at this point is a minor paved road. The entire distance within the town is an off-road trail.
Access:
This urban trail enters from the south near Highway #2.
Facilities:
Full facilities are available in the town. The Anthony Henday Campground is a Town of Innisfail facility open for camping from May to October. The campground is located on the northwest corner of Town where 56 Street intersects with Highway 54.
Points of Interest:
The Innisfail and District Historical Village originated in 1972 with the purpose of preserving and housing the history of the Innisfail district. The Village is open from mid-May until Labour Day and offers a self-guided tour of the grounds. Discovery Wildlife Park, located in Innisfail, will be the new home for the Zoo and Noah’s Ark. Discovery Wildlife Park displays both indigenous and exotic species; however, the main focus of the Park is to care for Canadian wildlife orphans and to educate the public about them.
