is an overall plan for the development of a trail network in Alberta. Previous trail development has focused mainly in the mountain and foothill regions. These proposed trails will enable recreationalists to experience the other natural regions of Alberta. It will be built around the Trans Canada Trail and will branch out into smaller trails, some shared use and some single use. It will join the major population centres, the major recreation areas and the neighbouring provinces. Recognition will be given to all existing trails, including the Alberta sections of the Sentier National Trail, the Trans Canada Snowmobile Trail and the Alexander Mackenzie Voyageur Route.

The process for creating this network must be locally managed, with support from the government and provincial associations. The final decision regarding management of each segment of the trail system will be made by the local trail sponsors which maintain the particular section. These organizations will determine which modes of travel are compatible with the local environment, and which are desired by the potential users.
